Rounding large numbers

Large numbers can sometimes be awkward to work with and often we do not need to give exact values so we can sometimes round these numbers.

For example, if a woman wanted to know how many people lived in a city she might not need to know an exact answer: if the actual population was 1,172,246 (one million,one hundred seventy-two thousand, two hundred forty-six) then knowing the population was around 1,200,000 (one million, two hundred thousand) might be close enough.

Reminder: Rules For Rounding Numbers

 

  • If the number you are rounding is followed by 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9, round the number up. Example: 79 rounded to the nearest ten is 80
  • If the number you are rounding is followed by 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4, round the number down. Example: 74 rounded to the nearest ten is 70
  • All the numbers to the right of the place you are rounding to become zeros.

Examples of Rounding Large Numbers

Round  the number 6,852,718
6,852,783 rounded to the nearest ten is 6,852,780
6,852,783. rounded to the nearest hundred is 6,852,800
6,852,783 rounded to the nearest thousand is 6,853,000
6,852,783 rounded to the nearest million is 7,000,000

 

121,365,587 to the nearest million
121,365,587: The underlined digit is less than 5 so the highlighted digit stays the same and all the digits to its right are made zeros. 121,000,000

 

121,635,587 to the nearest million
121,635,587: The underlined digit is more than 5 so the highlighted digit increases by 1 and all the digits to its right are made zeros. 122,000,000
