Answer the following questions:
1. What kind of lines form the coordinate graphing system?
a. parallel lines b. straight lines
c. perpendicular lines d. angled lines

2. In which direction does a horizontal line go?

It goes across, from left to right.
3. In which direction does a vertical line go?
It goes up and down.
4. What are the coordinates of a point called?
The coordinates are called an ordered pair.
5. What is the special name for the coordinates (0,0) where the lines intersect?
The origin.
6. Does the x axis number or the y axis number come first in an ordered pair?
x comes first.
7. What is the vertical axis called?
The vertical axis is called the y axis.
8. What is the horizontal axis called?
The horizontal axis is called the x axis.
9. What is each of the four sections created by the intersecting lines called?
A quadrant.
10. How are the four sections marked?
The quadrants are marked using Roman numerals.

Use a pair of perpendicular number lines, called axes, to define a coordinate system, with the intersection of the lines (the origin) arranged to coincide with the 0 on each line and a given point in the plane located by using an ordered pair of numbers, called its coordinates. Understand that the first number indicates how far to travel from the origin in the direction of one axis, and the second number indicates how far to travel in the direction of the second axis, with the convention that the names of the two axes and the coordinates correspond (e.g., x-axis and x-coordinate, y-axis and y-coordinate).
